A Global Problem
IN THE PAST 30 YEARS, APPROXIMATELY 50% OF CORAL REEFS AROUND THE WORLD HAVE BEEN LOST. WITHOUT DRASTIC ACTION WE COULD LOSE 90% OF THE WORLD'S CORAL REEFS BY 2050.
Our Local Solution
Kuleana Coral is working to put degraded reef ecosystems on a path to resilience so they can persist naturally and without human intervention. Focusing on Hawaii’s coral reefs, Kuleana Coral takes direct action on three objectives:

Coral Restoration
Kuleana Coral’s primary objective is to RESTORE damaged coral reefs around O’ahu. By developing coral restoration practices specific to Hawaii, Kuleana Coral aims to develop affordable and scalable techniques that will be applied islandwide.

Reef Monitoring and Mapping
Kuleana Coral monitors coral reefs to inform ecosystem-based management decisions. We use systems of cameras to map existing reefs, track the success of restored corals, and quantify populations of marine animals.

Kuleana Education and Outreach
“Kuleana” is the uniquely Hawaiian practice of fulfilling a special responsibility, honoring an obligation, protecting a stewardship. Kuleana requires action. Kuleana Coral is working within the community to educate locals and visitors about the importance of ocean ecosystems and our kuleana to protect them.
